🌍 Globalisation & Culture
Grade 11 • English Language • Self-study Lesson
🔹 2. Main ideas – Globalisation and culture
Globalisation brings people closer, but it also raises important questions about culture. Two major effects are often discussed:
- Cultural homogenisation: Global brands, fast food, and pop music can make cultures look similar. For example, you can find Starbucks or KFC in almost every big city. Some worry that local traditions may fade.
- Cultural diversity & hybridisation: At the same time, globalisation allows cultures to mix and create new forms. Vietnamese pho becomes popular in the US; K-pop borrows from Western pop but keeps a Korean identity. This is called cultural hybridisation (sự lai ghép văn hoá).
👉 The key is balance: globalisation can both threaten and enrich culture, depending on how people respond.
🔹 3. Real-life examples (Ví dụ thực tế)
📌 Example 1 – Food: Sushi from Japan is now eaten worldwide. In many countries, chefs add local ingredients (e.g., sushi with avocado or fried chicken). This shows cultural exchange and adaptation, not just uniformity.
📌 Example 2 – Fashion & Festivals: Áo dài is still worn on special occasions in Việt Nam, but young people also wear jeans and T-shirts. Meanwhile, international festivals like Halloween are celebrated in Hà Nội – a blend of global and local.
📌 Example 3 – Language: English is a global language, but many Vietnamese words are borrowed from English (e.g., “internet”, “selfie”). At the same time, English speakers now use “pho” and “banh mi” – a two-way exchange.
🔹 4. Useful language for discussion (Cấu trúc hữu ích)
- “On the one hand … , on the other hand …” – Một mặt …, mặt khác … (để đưa ra hai mặt của vấn đề)
- “Globalisation leads to …” – Toàn cầu hoá dẫn đến …
- “Cultural identity can be preserved by …” – Bản sắc văn hoá có thể được bảo tồn bằng cách …
- “In my opinion, the impact of globalisation on culture is …” – Theo tôi, tác động của toàn cầu hoá lên văn hoá là …
🔹 5. Reading comprehension – short passage
Read the paragraph below (tự đọc và suy ngẫm):
“Globalisation does not erase culture – it changes it. Many young people in Việt Nam enjoy K-pop and Hollywood films, but they also celebrate Tết (Lunar New Year) and wear áo dài on special days. The challenge is to keep local traditions alive while embracing global influences. The most successful societies find a way to integrate rather than imitate.”
📝 Câu hỏi củng cố (3 câu tự luận ngắn)
Hãy suy nghĩ và trả lời bằng tiếng Anh (2-4 câu mỗi câu) để tự kiểm tra hiểu bài:
- Give one example of cultural hybridisation in Việt Nam and explain why it is a mix of global and local.
- Do you think globalisation makes all cultures the same? Why or why not? Use one specific example.
- What can young people do to preserve their cultural identity while still enjoying global trends?
💡 Gợi ý: Không cần nộp câu trả lời, chỉ tự viết ra giấy hoặc nói thành tiếng để luyện tập.
